On March 30, 2025, from 8:30 AM to 1:00 PM, we organized an exciting event for 15 children, mostly aged between 8 to 11 years old. The children came from two different groups: the Persatuan Kebajikan Pelajar Miskin Daerah Taiping and the Sri Mariamman Temple Kamunting.
Our speaker for the day, Ms. Joanne Lum, is one of the founders and educators at Tadika Nature Learning, Ipoh, the first creative school in Ipoh. She shared her knowledge and wisdom through experiential hands-on learning.
The play-based learning curriculum was designed to optimize early childhood developmental milestones. Her ultimate goal is to share the joy of learning through hands-on activities and journaling. Ms. Joanne believes that every child deserves to develop an interest in learning. Accordingly, she emphasizes that play is the highest form of learning for a child and also a form of research they can experience.
In line with this goal, she encouraged the children to create beautiful nature-themed drawings, allowing their imaginations to run free. Additionally, Ms. Joanne taught them how to create quality soil using kitchen waste:
- Eggshells
- Coffee grounds
- Rice water
The children also planted bird’s eye chili and okra. Each child took home two potted plants provided by Ms. Joanne, which they were thrilled about.
The children were served a hearty breakfast before the activities began and a delicious, balanced lunch after completing them.
In addition to the two potted plants, each child also received a goodie bag containing age-appropriate gardening tools and a certificate of completion.
A token of appreciation was gifted to the esteemed Speaker along with a certificate of appreciation. The adult representatives of each participating group was given framed certificates of appreciation, too.
All in all, it was a successful endeavour which met our Organisation’s objectives.
The children were joyous in experiencing this unique workshop and certainly left with more knowledge and good memories to remember in days to come.
